Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp ginger grated or minced
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1/2 tbsp red pepper flakes (or to taste)
  • vegetable oil for cooking
  • salt to taste
  • 4 cups rice cooked

Garnish

  • green onions
  • toasted sesame seeds
  • soft boiled egg

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Once the oil is shimmering, add the minced garlic and grated ginger. Let them sizzle for a minute until the heavenly aroma fills the air.
  • Add the onions and cook until softened. Move onions to one side of the skillet to make room for the beef.
  • Gently place the ground beef into the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Sauté the beef until it's browned and cooked through, usually about 5-7 minutes.
  • When the beef is cooked, add the soy sauce, brown sugar, mirin, and chili flakes, stirring until the beef is coated evenly. Let it simmer for another 2-3 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
  • While the beef soaks up all the luscious flavors, cook your rice.
  • Scoop a generous amount of rice into each bowl, and then ladle the beef mixture on top.
  • Garnish with sliced green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and a soft boiled egg for a refreshing finish.
