How is homemade granola different?

One of the biggest differences between store-bought and homemade granola is the crunch, which relates to its freshness. If you were to do a side by side taste test comparison of the two, you’ll notice that the homemade granola, straight out of the oven, has a more fresh crispy taste than a bag from the store. The granola may not be quite as hard, but you will taste the difference right away!

Another benefit to learning how to make granola is the control you have over the recipe. You know all the simple and healthy ingredients going into your granola at home, with no additives or preservatives. You can also add preferred healthy ingredients such as dried berries or fruit, nuts, seeds, and sweetener in the granola for some variety and a personalized touch!

Ingredients for my simple granola recipe:

You just need a few staple ingredients to create a good base for healthy granola:

  1. Oats – you can’t have good granola without some old fashioned oats. While you can make granola from just nuts, or even rolled oats, old fashioned oats are my personal favorite and make this recipe deliciously crisp.
  2. Nuts – you can use any nut you like for this granola recipe. Our household favorite nut to include are pecans, as they are crisp, smooth, and have healthy fats.
  3. Seeds – again, you can choose the seeds you prefer. I love to include chia seeds and hemp hearts for some added protein and healthy fats, and when I have them on hand, pumpkin seeds as well!
  4. Coconut oil (or another oil) – this helps to give a good texture to the granola and adds to the flavor.
  5. Maple Syrup (or honey) – to help the mixture stick together and taste just a touch of sweet, you’ll want to include a healthy sweetener like maple syrup or honey.
  6. Cinnamon (or preferred spices) – adding a touch of cinnamon, or a Fall favorite like pumpkin pie spice adds a beautiful flavor to your granola.
  7. Salt – this gives a more balanced taste to the granola
  8. Dried fruit or berries (optional) – I love the addition of some dried fruits to this granola recipe. It adds a pop of flavor and sweetness, along with a chewy texture.

There are an endless number of granola variations, but this is my base for every homemade granola recipe I make!
